The Freedom of the Fence

Lately, I've been reflecting on what G. K. Chesterton said about how the Church is like a fence along the edge of a deep precipice that allows the children within to play as freely as they like comfortable in the knowledge that they are safe as long as they stay within the limits of the fence.

He's absolutely right. I've been spending my time focusing on the fence instead of how much freedom I do have and how much fun I can have inside the fence. Perspective is a nutty thing.

  1. To save children from the precipice is a nobble and humanitarian gesture, except the fact that the church has ulterior motives. However, the implication of the same 'fence' being true for adults is wrong. Any 'adult' that does not have enough common sense and 'plays' at the edge of the precipice, I say... let him/her do it.
